1.7 Strong Wind Alert

The Indian Meteorological department gives a special warning in case of strong winds. The expected intensity of the wind will be included in the daily weather bulletin. In the case of strong winds in the ocean, the Indian Meteorological department issues warning to avoid fishing activities.

Strong winds are a state-specific disaster that causes the most damage and loss of life. During the early days the practice of pruning large trees before the monsoon season was in practice. But nowadays this practice is seldom practiced and hence branches or even trees falling down due to strong winds are common. This causes large scale damage and loss of life. Moreover, advertisement holdings, weak posts, and roofs that are not properly earthed tend to blow away under heavy winds causing damage and loss of life to owners, neighbours or other innocent people.

In order to reduce tree falling accidents, pruning of tree branches should be made mandatory during the pre-monsoon period. They need to build a public awareness that trees should not be allowed to grow like they are in a natural forest and they should be maintained in such a way that it should not cause any harm to human life and property. The local self-government should take necessary steps in this regard.

The local self-government should also make sure that the advertisement holdings, weak posts, and roofs that are not properly earthed should be strengthened by the owner of the same.
