Southwest monsoon is the major rainy season for the Indian subcontinent. Which first hits the Western Ghats of the coastal state of Kerala, thus making this area the first state in India to receive rain from the southwest monsoon. The Southwest monsoon that arrives in the month of June is called Edavapathy (Kalavarsham), and the northeast monsoon that we name thulavarsham arrives in mid-October. In the state, the average annual precipitation is 2924.7 mm. Of which, 2049.3 mm rainfall during the southwest monsoon. During regular north-east monsoon, around 491.7 mm precipitation is available. July is the wettest month of the entire year with a total amount of precipitation of 720.1 mm and 643mm in the month of June. The average expected rainfall in August, after these two major rainy months, is 427mm. The above statistics are based on the study conducted by IMD over the country as a whole for the period 1961-2010.

IMD is responsible to alert the government and other officials of the weather warning. The monsoon planning and preparedness in India are focused exclusively on IMD’s April month Long range forecast.
